Twin Terror Attacks in South Kashmir | Ex-Sarpanch killed, couple injured

Srinagar, May 18:  A former Sarpanch was killed and a couple from Rajasthan injured in two separate terror attacks in Shopian and Anantnag districts of south Kashmir on Saturday evening, Police said.

In the first incident, terrorists targeted Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh, a former Sarpanch from Haripora, Shopian. The attack took place in the evening, and Sheikh was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital.

Despite efforts by medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The Kashmir Zone Police confirmed the attack in a post on the microblogging site ‘X’, stating, “#Terrorist fired upon a person Aijaz Ahmad at Heerpora, #Shopian. Injured evacuated. The area has been cordoned off. Further details to follow.@JmuKmrPolice.”

They later updated, “He was removed to hospital but succumbed to grievous injuries during the initial treatment.”

Sheikh had been elected as a Sarpanch on a BJP ticket.

Following the incident, security forces cordoned off the area and launched an intense search operation to track down the assailants.

In a separate incident in the Yannar area of Anantnag district, a couple from Rajasthan was injured in a terror attack.

The victims were identified as Farha and her husband Tabrez of Jaipur, Rajasthan.

“Terrorists fired at and injured a woman Farha of Jaipur and her spouse Tabrez at Yannar, #Anantnag. The injured were evacuated to the hospital for treatment. The area has been cordoned off. Further details shall follow,” Kashmir Zone Police reported in another post on X.

The couple was evacuated to a local hospital where they are receiving treatment for their injuries. Security forces have cordoned off the area and are conducting thorough searches to apprehend the attackers.

According to reports, the couple was on a visit to Kashmir as tourists.
