New Delhi, July 31: Severe turbulence on flights is expected to increase sharply due to climate change, according to an in-depth research article published by the BBC. Experts say rising global temperatures are altering atmospheric patterns, making flights bumpier and potentially more dangerous.

Professor Paul Williams from the University of Reading told the BBC that incidents of severe turbulence, enough to lift passengers out of their seats could double or triple in the coming decades. Already, turbulence over the North Atlantic has risen by 55% in 40 years, with similar increases expected over East Asia, North Africa, and North America.

Climate change is intensifying both thunderstorm-related and clear-air turbulence. While planes are built to withstand such forces, the economic impact on airlines is growing.

A BBC-cited estimate puts annual turbulence-related costs at up to £1.5 million per airline. Meanwhile, airlines are adapting by adjusting flight routes, improving forecasts, and even changing in-flight services. However, as experts warn, passengers should be prepared for more seatbelt signs in the skies ahead.
