Trump confirms talks with Putin, hints at efforts to end Ukraine war
New Delhi, Feb 9: U.S. President Donald Trump has revealed that he has spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to an interview published on Saturday, CNN reported. However, it remains unclear when these conversations took place or how often they have occurred since Trump left office. CNN reported that they have reached out to the National Security Council for clarification.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told CNN saying that he can neither deny nor confirm this news, stating that Washington and Moscow communicate through multiple channels. He added that as Trump’s political activity increases, new discussions may be happening that he is unaware of…as reported by CNN.
Trump has also reiterated his desire to see an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine, now approaching its third anniversary. He had previously claimed he could resolve the conflict within 24 hours if re-elected. “I hope it’s fast. Every day people are dying. This war is so bad in Ukraine. I want to end this damn thing,” he told the New York Post as reported by CNN.
Trump also hinted at a potential meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying he would “probably” meet him next week. Zelensky is expected to attend the Munich Security Conference, where U.S. Vice President JD Vance and special envoy for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg will also be present. However, Trump is not scheduled to attend, reports CNN.
The Kremlin previously told CNN that there have been no serious discussions about a Trump-Putin meeting but reports are appearing in the media of a possible meeting between the two leaders soon.
