Trouble in Trump world: Musk steps back, Pentagon in turmoil amid signal scandal

New Delhi, Apr 24: Two of Donald Trump’s closest allies are facing mounting scrutiny, casting a shadow over the early months of the president’s second term as reported by US media outlets. Elon Musk, once hailed as a political and business masterstroke in Trump’s inner circle, is retreating from his controversial government role. Meanwhile, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth is battling a growing scandal over leaked military secrets and internal chaos at the Pentagon.

Musk’s proximity to power was initially seen as a boon for Tesla and his broader business empire. But the gamble appears to be backfiring most of the media repoted. His position at the helm of the Department of Government Efficiency (nicknamed “Doge”) has sparked backlash, contributing to what analysts call “massive brand damage.” Tesla’s first-quarter profits plummeted by 70%, and Musk has confirmed he will step down from his government role next month, citing reputational blowback.

At the Pentagon, the situation is even more fraught. Hegseth is facing intense scrutiny following revelations that he shared classified information in a Signal group chat with family members, reports media. This follows earlier reports that he and others discussed a military operation on the same platform. In the wake of the controversy, Hegseth has dismissed several top aides as part of an internal probe into leaks, adding to the sense of instability. Defence analysts also question Hegseth’s experience and leadership style. Despite this, Trump has so far stood by his defence secretary, but any forced resignation would be a political setback and re-open a contentious search for a replacement.

The turbulence comes at a critical moment for Trump’s foreign policy agenda. With the Pentagon’s leadership in flux, questions are mounting over whether the administration can effectively execute its ambitious plans abroad. If Musk exits and Hegseth flounders, President Trump may find his inner circle more liability than asset.
