Training programme for over 3,000 Aayas concludes across Kashmir
Srinagar, Dec 10: A month-long capacity-building programme for more than 3,000 Aayas (ECCE helpers) across Kashmir has concluded, marking one of the region’s largest skill-enhancement initiatives for school support staff. The training, conducted district-wise between November 3 and December 9, was organised by SCERT Kashmir Division in collaboration with DSEK, UNICEF and JKASW, covering all 10 districts with around 300 Aayas trained per district.
Officials said the programme aimed to strengthen early childhood care by equipping Aayas with practical skills, clearer role understanding and knowledge of NEP-2020 and ECCE frameworks. The training stressed child safety, hygiene, early learning support and emotional care. Around 8,000 Aayas currently work in pre-primary government schools across Kashmir.
Fahmida, an Aaya from Kunzer, said the programme helped them understand their responsibilities more clearly. “Most of our children come from poor families. The training taught us how to take better care of them,” she said. Another trainee, Sameena Ashraf, added that many Aayas earlier lacked clarity about their duties, and the training helped streamline their role in schools.
The programme was inaugurated on October 30 at SCERT-KD by Education Minister Sakina Itoo, who urged Aayas to embrace early childhood care practices and contribute to nurturing school-ready children.
