Training on ornamental fisheries commences at SKUAST-K
Srinagar, Dec 22: A seven-day training program on ‘Entrepreneurship Development in Ornamental Fish Culture, Management and Aquarium Trade’ commenced at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir, Rangil Campus.
A statement said that the training has been organised by the SKUAST-K’s Division of Aquaculture, Faculty of Fisheries under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, Govt of India. Twenty-five aspiring entrepreneurs with different backgrounds are participating in the programme.
The programme started with a brief overview of the workshop by Dr Anayitullah Chesti, Head Division of Aquaculture. Dean, FoFy, Prof Farooz Ahmad Bhat, highlighted the status and importance of ornamental fisheries at the global, national and local levels. He said India despite being third major fish producer and second aquaculture producer globally but in Ornamental trade India ranks 31st.
Dr Debtanu Barman, CEO, Aqua Doctor Solutions also attended the inaugural session. Training Coordinator, Dr Mansoor Ahmad, said the seven-day training program will highlight the importance and scope of the ornamental fish sector as an income and employment generation sector through lectures, practicals and exposure visits.
