TRAI unveils consultation paper for National Broadcasting Policy-2024

New Delhi, Apr 2:  The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) launched a Consultation Paper titled 'Inputs for formulation of National Broadcasting Policy-2024' on Tuesday.

This initiative stems from a request by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting dated July 13, 2023, urging TRAI to provide inputs under Section 11 of the TRAI Act, 1997, for the development of the National Broadcasting Policy.

As an initial step, TRAI issued a Pre-Consultation Paper on September 21, 2023, to identify key issues essential for the formulation of the policy.

TRAI has prepared the Consultation Paper seeking inputs from stakeholders. The document is available on TRAI's website (www.trai.gov.in), with a deadline for written comments set for April 30, 2024. Counter-comments are not invited in this phase, as the paper primarily focuses on formulating inputs for the broadcasting policy.

The Consultation Paper aims to address crucial issues within the broadcasting sector, with the overarching goal of positioning India as a 'Global Content Hub.' It delves into policy and regulatory measures, strategies for economic contribution enhancement, innovation stimulation through research and development, job creation, skill development, and startup promotion.

Furthermore, the paper explores topics such as strengthening public service broadcasting, combating piracy, ensuring content security, implementing audience measurement systems, terrestrial broadcasting, and socio-environmental responsibilities.

The formulation of the National Broadcasting Policy-2024 aims to establish a vision, mission, objectives, and strategies for the growth and development of the broadcasting sector in India, aligning with new and emerging technologies.
