I called the Moul Mouj toll-free number to request assistance for an elderly couple who had become financially dependent and were now neglected by their married son. Without hesitation, the couple was provided with a Lifetime Privilege Card, granting them access to free medical care at the Moul Mouj Health Centre (MMHC).

This elderly couple has two sons and a daughter. One of their sons tragically passed away in childhood due to kidney disease, while their surviving son, now married, allows his wife to mistreat the elderly couple. Their daughter-in-law had been treating her mother in law like a maid and mistreating both of them. The couple felt trapped in the home they had built, contemplating leaving. Recently, the daughter-in-law had spent a sum of Rs 75,000, on renovating a bathroom for her children, using this expenditure as an excuse to demand that the elderly couple vacate the house. She even went as far as restricting their married daughter from visiting her parental home.

In a desperate twist, the elderly man mentioned he was considering charging rent to his own son for living in what he still considered his property. “If they spent money on renovations and now stake a claim, I should have been compensated for allowing them to stay all these years. If they remain arrogant, I may even have to go to the police before our fate mirrors the elderly couple from Nowgam who were thrashed by their son on the road,” he said, revealing the tragic absurdity of his situation.

This story is not an isolated incident; it highlights the plight of countless seniors enduring maltreatment and emotional abuse from their own families. Many elderly people find themselves stripped of dignity and humanity, leading to a decline in their mental and emotional well-being.

Family should be a sanctuary of love and respect, yet when financial disputes arise, compassion can be lost. This elderly man thinking of charging rent to his own son reflects the cold reality faced by many: instead of receiving love and care, they are treated as burdens.

As we reflect on this troubling situation, we must recognize the urgent need to preserve the dignity of our elders. They are not just dependents; they are individuals who have dedicated their lives to building and nurturing their families. We must advocate for their rights and well-being, ensuring they receive the respect they deserve in their later years. The Moul Mouj Foundation is making a significant difference for seniors, and increased awareness about elder rights should be prioritized by experts at MMF
