Traffic restored on Srinagar–Kargil Highway after snow clearance by BRO
Ganderbal, Jan 31: Traffic movement on the Zojila Pass axis of the Srinagar–Kargil National Highway was restored on Saturday after remaining suspended due to recent heavy snowfall in the area.
Officials said the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) launched snow-clearance operations on the Zojila Pass following an improvement in weather conditions after heavy snowfall. About three to four feet of snow had accumulated on the stretch.
The highway was closed earlier as a precautionary measure, and snow-clearance work began on Thursday after weather conditions improved. Officials said that once the road was cleared, traffic movement was restored from the Kargil side.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution while travelling on the highway and advised them to carry anti-skid chains to ensure better grip on slippery road conditions. The Traffic Control Unit (TCU) Srinagar and PCR Kargil will keep commuters informed about cut-off timings.
Meanwhile, Drass Police, in an advisory, said that in view of recent snowfall, the national highway as well as interior roads in Drass subdivision are slippery. For public safety, no vehicle will be allowed to ply on the Kargil–Zojila axis or interior roads without anti-skid chains.
“This measure is being taken in the interest of public safety. Your safety is our top priority,” the advisory said.
