It has now been quite many months, being here in Germany. Though I miss Kashmir each day, yet, at times, it makes me ponder over many things that we Kashmiris need to learn from Germans. Living closely with the German citizens over these months was quite rich an experience by watching them closely. The life of all the citizens in the country has indeed impressed me a lot. Literally, it had much that I need to share with the citizens of my own land. In fact, it is my second write-up that I am contributing to GK from Germany, yet, this time, the thought that has been flashing my mind, over many days, is that Germany as a nation doesn’t face dilemmas like we Kashmiris usually face. Be it traffic jamming, cleanliness, taking care of elders, noise or water pollution, transport, or for that matter education system, German citizens are undoubtedly role models. They are a progressive society who possess that civic sense and act responsibly every time and everywhere. They also prioritize environmental conservation and sustainability, enjoying outdoor activities like hiking and cycling. They take pride in maintaining their country’s natural beauty and cleanliness.

For example, they don’t litter there surroundings with trash and garbage like we usually do in Kashmir. From the day one of my arrival in Germany, I came across news headlines everyday carrying stories of my Kashmir related to garbage and stink that has terribly pestered the lives of Srinagarites particularly. But, honestly, it is not so here in Germany. Germans are responsible citizens who strictly restraint to pollute their surroundings. They live cleanly and decently. They take care of their surroundings themselves. They don’t depend on their Government usually in matters which they can themselves set right. They are practical not theoretical like us. In terms of solid waste, Kashmir will win gold medal. As Kashmiris, we deem it a sign of pride, if we throw out much garbage. But, here in Germany, it is totally foolishness, if a family produces much solid waste. What a family usually does here is that they firstly minimize the use of waste, and secondly, they separate their waste at their own end into biodegradable (what decomposes) and non-biodegradable (what doesn’t decompose).

Honestly, Germans are known for their exceptional qualities, which contribute to their country’s strong economy, culture, and society. They value time and punctuality, considering it a sign of respect. They adhere to strict schedules and expect others to do the same, making their public transportation systems and workplaces highly efficient. They prioritize efficiency, discipline, and precision in their work. They’re dedicated, motivated, and strive for excellence, contributing to Germany’s reputation for high-quality production. They appreciate directness and honesty, valuing clear and concise interactions. They’re known for speaking their minds openly and without sugar-coating, which fosters trust and prevents misunderstandings, preferring a structured approach to life, valuing rules, regulations, and organization. This is evident in their well-organized public spaces, efficient public services, and meticulous planning.

Germans are law-abiding citizens, adhering to rules and regulations. This is reflected in their country’s strong sense of order and high ranking in the Rule of Law Index. I haven’t seen any gridlocks, or traffic jamming in Germany, and there is no honking on the roads except when some ambulance goes during exigency. I haven’t also seen any policeman here anywhere or any person having gun or stick in his hand to control the situation. System works very decently itself because every citizen here acts responsibly.

We all know that it was German chemist Hans Von Pechmann who accidentally discovered Polythene. But let me tell you that though it was discovered in Germany, yet, there are no traces of polythene anywhere in Germany. I have seen such beautiful parks, public spaces, streams, roads here without any polythene bags. All across is so clean and so fresh. The terrible stink that emanates from all sides in my Kashmir, especially in Srinagar city during summer months, is not a concept at all here in Germany. Air is so fresh, breathable with lush green surroundings and clean water bodies. There are small streams flowing so melodiously in residential areas. Ah! They so lovely and pristine. Honestly speaking, if you walk through any street or locality and pay a look at those small streams, you will be overtaken by a divine feeling. Such is the cleanliness everywhere. Yes, they have not spoilt their water bodies like us. They are conscious about everything and live life strictly as per the human principles.

Germans strive for thoroughness in their work and daily tasks, evident in their craftsmanship, engineering, and academic pursuits. They prioritize education, taking pride in their well-established education system and commitment to lifelong learning. This fosters intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and academic achievements. They don’t force their kids to go to school from the very delicate age. They have an attractive education system wherein their kids join Kitas above the age of 6. They believe, whatever is learned in pressurized environment, never bears any fruits. They are so helpful and look out for one another, demonstrating a sense of community and social responsibility. They prioritize the greater good and welfare of their community, contributing to a cohesive society. There’s much to be learned from their experiences. By embracing innovation, sustainability, and community-driven initiatives, Kashmir can pave its own path towards progress and prosperity. The awakening sparked by Germany’s example can ignite a new era of growth, opportunity, and hope for the region, ultimately leading to a brighter future for its people.
