Top Tamil Nadu police officer arrested after High Court order in kidnapping Case: Bar & Bench

New Delhi, Jun 17: Tamil Nadu’s Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) HM Jayaram was arrested on Monday, shortly after the Madras High Court made serious observations against him and MLA Poovai M Jagan Moorthy in connection with an abduction case, Bar & Bench reported. The case relates to the kidnapping of a teenage boy after his elder brother married a woman against her family’s wishes.

The younger brother, who was reportedly asleep on the terrace of his home, was abducted by men said to be linked to the woman’s family.

Justice P Velmurugan was hearing MLA Moorthy’s plea for anticipatory bail when the Court was informed that the MLA was absconding. The judge then ordered both Moorthy and ADGP Jayaram, who was also suspected to be involved in the case, to appear in person later that day. Moorthy later appeared before the court, which did not order his arrest immediately but directed him to cooperate with the investigation. “Since he has appeared in person, he is directed to co-operate for the investigation being done by the Police,” the Court said.

However, the Court was firm on the ADGP’s role. It stated that since two of the arrested accused had already confessed to his involvement, the police must act against Jayaram “in the manner known to law.” According to media reports, he was arrested soon after. The police investigation revealed that several people had been involved in the kidnapping. Some of those arrested allegedly named MLA Moorthy and ADGP Jayaram during questioning. The case is next scheduled for hearing on June 26 in the Madras High Court.
