I was excited to read a genuine, data-backed piece — a rarity in our discourse today. The author has done commendable work in highlighting the evolution and potential of Kashmir’s apple economy, reflecting both its strengths and challenges.

It’s worth recalling that agriculture once contributed 62% to J&K’s GSDP, but now stands at just 16%, with vast tracts being converted into residential colonies despite existing land laws. This unchecked trend threatens both ecological balance and food security. We must urgently protect our agricultural lands from further erosion.

That said, the shift from agriculture to horticulture has offered hope for revitalizing the rural economy — acceptable so long as it ensures sustainable income, once termed “one lakh for one kanal.” This is achievable only through hybrid varieties, modern agri-technology, and scientific management. For decades, the valley’s yield has stagnated at 10.5 MT per hectare, while global averages are 60–70 MT, and New Zealand has attained 120 MT, as told to me by the VC, SKUAST.

The author’s call for widespread hybrid apple cultivation with strong facilitation, credit flow, and technology support is both timely and essential — and deserves full endorsement.

However, two crucial aspects merit attention: the marketing challenges due to unreliable road transport, and the lack of processing facilities for culled and C-grade apples, which account for nearly 40% of total produce. Addressing these could unlock immense value and employment potential.

Overall, a wonderful, information-rich article that invites serious policy reflection. It deserves appreciation — and concrete follow-up to ensure that the “apple of our eyes” truly becomes the engine of Kashmir’s rural transformation.

Kudos to the young talented author.
