In 2014, Kashmir experienced its worst flood in over a century as relentless rains from September 3rd to 7th caused the river Jhelum to overflow, submerging neighbourhoods across the valley. Streets turned into rivers, with water levels reaching up to 18 feet in some places, causing widespread destruction to homes, businesses, and livelihoods. The disaster caused an economic loss of over Rs 5000 crores, according to ASSOCHAM.

Amidst the devastation, then Chief Justice of the J&K High Court, Justice M. M. Kumar delivered a landmark ruling by ordering insurance companies to offer interim compensation to insured individuals, a decision hailed by trade bodies for helping people rebuild their lives.

Despite the lessons learned from the catastrophe, unplanned urbanization and encroachment of wetlands continue to put the valley at risk of future disasters.
