How the University of Kashmir Rose to A++ Glory

Today, as the University of Kashmir receives the rare A grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a historic CGPA of 3.68, I speak not just as its Cultural Officer, who has been entrusted to nurture the talent of our youth and moUld them into ambassadors of hope, harmony and excellence, but as a dreamer who believes in its magic. This recognition is more than an accolade, it is the voice of a thousand prayers, the reward of a resilient spirit and the outcome of decades of collective sacrifice, silent perseverance and hope.

I too, like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., have a dream. A dream where the youth of Kashmir are not defined by their geography but by their genius. Where they are not seen as mere survivors of challenges but as champions of culture, stewards of peace and pioneers of progress. That dream lives and breathes through this University. Within these classrooms and corridors, we are not just delivering syllabi. We are shaping destinies. Despite withstanding the storms of uncertainty over the past three and a half decades, marked by disruptions, shutdowns and restrictions, our University has not merely endured the turbulence. It has risen above it. Like the majestic chinars rooted in the serene Naseem Bagh of our campus, we have stood tall through every season. We have remained grounded in grace, strengthened by adversity and uplifted by hope.

This moment of glory is not a mere rank to showcase, it is an emotion and a responsibility to uphold. It is the victory of will over worry, of vision over violence, of determination over disruption. Our beloved land has faced challenges no place of learning should ever have to face. Yet through every hardship, it has revealed its true strength, growing stronger, standing firm and inspiring hope. These challenges are not obstacles, but the seeds of a brighter future. Being at the top must inspire us to climb even higher. We must not only retain our stature, but transform it into a launching pad for even bolder dreams. Because we are not only the best in academic performance but in humility, in vision and in the unshakable spirit of our people.

Our land is fertile and so are our thoughts. Our rivers are pure and so is our purpose. Our skies are wide and so are our aspirations. Our gardens burst with colour and so do our imaginations. The University of Kashmir does not merely sit in the lap of beauty; it rises from it like a crown of knowledge, wisdom and resilience. This land does not just grow crops, it cultivates dreams. It raises minds that think deeply, hearts that feel strongly and spirits that refuse to break. Just as the saffron fields of Pampore bloom in patience and silence, our students blossom in the quiet strength of learning and growth. The rivers that flow through our valley speak of continuity and courage. They remind us that no matter how many stones are thrown in our path, we carve our way forward with dignity and grace.

This achievement is not just the result of plans and policies, it is the culmination of countless unseen sacrifices, of tireless efforts poured in by hearts that believed in the impossible. It belongs to those who kept going when the world paused, who chose perseverance over despair and purpose over comfort. Every brick laid, every form filed, every late-night discussion, every quiet act of service, each became a thread in this extraordinary fabric of success. It is the story of a community that dared to dream together and work as one. From every corner of the campus, in every role and responsibility, emerged a shared spirit of resilience and pride. You didn’t just do your duty, you gave a part of your soul. And in doing so, you turned a university into a symbol of excellence, a valley of learning into a light for the nation. This moment belongs to you, to your belief, your labour, your love for this institution. And let the world know: when the people of Kashmir come together with vision, nothing is beyond reach. Together, we have not only earned this A grade, we have etched history into the heart of the Himalayas.

The University of Kashmir is no longer a whisper lost in the winds of the valley; it is a powerful anthem rising across the national and international stage. We once dared to dream of excellence and today we are living and leading it. Our students are no longer confined by geography or circumstance; they are soaring beyond borders and expectations. I have witnessed them mesmerize audiences, break stereotypes and represent Kashmir with unmatched grace and brilliance. From national debates that resonate in Delhi, Tirupati, Nagpur, Kolkata, and Hyderabad to cultural festivals that celebrate their spirit in Ahmedabad, Punjab, Hyderabad, Lakhnow, Chennai, Allahabad (Prayagraj), Bangalore and beyond; from presenting academic brilliance in Australia, America, and China to exchanging ideas with the world’s finest minds, they are not just participants, they are pioneers.

They carry with them the fragrance of our Chinars, the strength of our mountains, and the clarity of our rivers. They are the voice of a rising Kashmir, bold in intellect, rich in culture, and extraordinary in vision. Through them, the world is not only seeing the University of Kashmir, it is believing in it. This A distinction is not an end; it is a beginning. A declaration that Kashmir is no longer just a paradise of landscapes, but a paradise of learning. Not just a place to visit, but a place to look up to.

This moment belongs to all, the security guard who opens the gates at dawn, the gardener who brings life to our campus, the teacher who burn the midnight oil, the alumni who carry KU in their identity and every student who dares to dream. To every student—this is your dawn. Walk into it. Not with fear, but with fire. To every teacher—you are not teaching a class, you are building a civilization. To every policymaker and parent—your belief in us has shaped our story. Now, help us write the next chapter. Let the world see: we are not chasing excellence. We are crafting it. We are not echoing greatness. We are embodying it.

At the heart of this remarkable journey stands a leader of rare grace and determination, Professor Nilofer Khan, our Hon’ble Vice Chancellor. Her leadership goes beyond strategy. It comes from the soul. She leads not just with her mind, but with her whole heart. With boundless energy, deep sincerity and an unshakable commitment to every student, teacher and staff member, she has guided this institution with the care of a mother and the vision of a true pioneer. As the first woman to lead this University, she is not only breaking barriers but also steering us toward our brightest and finest hour. Under her guidance, the future shines brighter than ever before.

The University has restored academic timelines, strengthened research and embraced sustainability. Our campuses, from Hazratbal to Anantnag, Zakura to Baramulla, are now not only spaces of learning, they are sanctuaries of hope. Let the world know. We are no longer content to catch up. We are here to lead. Our University is not just a participant in the race for excellence. It is setting the pace. Let every student know, this is your time. The stage is set. The curtain is lifted. Shine, speak, soar.

Long live the University of Kashmir. Long live the spirit of its people. I am proud to be a part of this highest seat of learning. Where dreams are nurtured, destinies are shaped and history is written not just in words, but in the journey from darkness to light.

Dr. Shahid Ali Khan, Cultural Officer at the University of Kashmir.
