Thakur's heroics keep Mumbai afloat, J&K pacers impress
Srinagar, Jan 24: A stunning unbeaten century by Shardul Thakur (113* off 119) salvaged Mumbai’s innings on Day 2 of their clash against Jammu and Kashmir, turning the tide after an early collapse at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy, BKC.
Despite a fierce display by J&K’s pacers, Thakur’s 173-run partnership with Tanush Kotian (58* off 119) ensured Mumbai ended the day at 274/7, with a vital lead of 188 runs.
Starting the day at 174/7, J&K managed to add only 32 more runs before being dismissed for 206, securing a vital first-inning lead of 86 runs. Mohit Avasthi was the standout bowler for Mumbai, claiming five wickets and preventing J&K from extending their lead further.
Mumbai began their innings on a promising note with an opening partnership of 54 between Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Sharma looked particularly dangerous, smashing three sixes in his quickfire 28 before being dismissed by Yudhvir Singh.
The situation turned down quickly for Mumbai after Sharma's exit. Umar Nazir's inswinger deceived Hardik Tamore, who left the ball only to see his stumps disturbed for just 1. Jaiswal soon followed, falling to Yudhvir Singh, leaving Mumbai at a shaky 57/3.
Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer tried to consolidate, putting together a 29-run partnership. However, Aquib Nabi’s devastating over turned the tide, as he dismissed Shivam Dube on Duck and followed with a brilliant catch by Paras Dogra at mid-off to dismiss Ajinkya Rahane. This shifted the momentum back to J&K, leaving Mumbai at 101-7.
Just when it looked like J&K might dominate, Thakur and Kotian turned the tide. Their heroic 173-run stand for the seventh wicket was nothing short of game-changing. Thakur's aggressive 100 off 105 balls showcased a blend of determination and skill, while Kotian provided steady support with his crucial innings. Their partnership gave Mumbai a fighting chance, ensuring the team ended the day on a strong note.
As the match heads into Day 3, J&K will need their pacers to disrupt this partnership early if they are to regain control. With the game hanging in the balance, the spotlight will be on J&K's bowling attack to finish off Mumbai's innings and push for a victory.
