The mercury in J&K took a sharp dip on Thursday with Srinagar and Jammu recording their second lowest minimum temperatures in February in the past decade.

According to the Meteorological Department officials, Srinagar saw temperatures plummeting to minus 5.2 degrees Celsius while Jammu recorded 3.6 degrees Celsius. This marks a significant drop in temperature for both the cities with Srinagar experiencing a 4.8 degrees Celsius departure from the normal temperature for this time of year.

The last time Srinagar witnessed such low temperatures in February was on February 9, 2019, when it recorded minus 5.7 degrees Celsius.

The all-time low for Srinagar in February occurred on February 6, 1985, when temperatures plunged to a bone-chilling minus 20 degrees Celsius.

Qazigund recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6.4 degrees Celsius, which is 4.9 degrees Celsius below normal.

Pahalgam experienced a low of minus 11.9 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag recorded minus 4.5 degrees Celsius. Kupwara saw temperatures drop to minus 4.5 degrees Celsius, and Gulmarg skiing resort recorded a low of minus 12 degrees Celsius.

In Jammu, the minimum temperature was recorded at 3.6 degrees Celsius, significantly below normal by 5.9 degrees Celsius.

Banihal recorded a low of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius, Batote 0.3 degrees Celsius, and Bhaderwah minus 2.1 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department forecasted dry weather until February 17, with occasional cloudy evenings around February 14.

However, there is a possibility of light snow and rain between February 18 and 20.
