Srinagar, Jan 21: In a heart-breaking incident, a teenager from Srinagar passed away due to rabies at SMHS Hospital today. The victim had been bitten by a dog over a month ago and had not taken Anti-Rabies Vaccine, Hospital authorities said.

According to SMHS Hospital administration, the person was brought to hospital on 18 January and was diagnosed with Rabies Encephalitis. He was admitted in isolation ward and breathed his last in the wee hours of 21 January. The victim, 19 year old, was a resident of Narbal Srinagar. Dr Tasneem Showkat, Medical Superintendent SMHS Hospital said Rabies was a fatal infection and the patients cannot be cured. “It is an unfortunate incident and could have been averted with timely vaccination,” she said.

Block Medical Officer Magam, Dr Mir Mushtaq said the person a team from Zone Medical Officer (ZMO) Narbal visited the area and investigated the case on the spot. He said it was learnt that the victim had been bitten by a dog 35 days prior to developing symptoms in his finger. “Unfortunately, he had not sought medical attention nor informed his family about the bite, allowing the infection to progress unchecked,” he said. He added that the person had also not been vaccinated.

“The victim began showing symptoms of rabies three days ago and was subsequently shifted to SMHS Hospital in Srinagar for treatment.” However, rabies is an infection that has no cure and a mortality rate of 100 percent once symptoms appear.

After the final rites, the Health Authorities began a vaccination drive of his close contacts of the deceased, and the people who participated in preparing the body for burial. Dr Mushtaq said 20 people were administered ARV at PHC Narbal.
