Kulgam, Oct 8: Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader M Y Tarigami has achieved a remarkable fifth consecutive victory in the Kulgam assembly segment.

The veteran leftist politician defeated his nearest rival, Sayar Reeshi, an independent candidate backed by ex-leaders of banned Jamat-i-Islami, by over 7,000 votes.

Tarigami was first elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in 1996 and successfully retained his seat in 2002. Although he faced tough competition from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates in the 2008 and 2014 assembly elections, he ultimately emerged victorious.

This constituency is notable as the only one in Jammu and Kashmir that has been continuously represented by a left-wing party. Tarigami's success is largely attributed to his significant contributions to development in the area. “His track record of development in the Kulgam constituency is evident for all to see,” said Rafiq Ahmad, a jubilant supporter of the CPI(M).

Prior to Tarigami’s tenure, the constituency was represented by the slain National Conference leader Ghulam Nabi Dar and Abdul Razak Mir Bachroo from Jamat-i-Islami, both of whom were tragically killed.

Speaking to Greater Kashmir, Tarigami expressed his gratitude to the people for their trust and assured them, “I will become their voice in the assembly.”
