Tangmarg Under Threat: Authorities vow inquiry into encroachments, illegal earth-cutting

Srinagar, Dec 14: The authorities Saturday promised an inquiry into encroachments and illegal earth-cutting in Tangmarg.

The action comes following the Greater Kashmir’s report on the issue on Saturday about the unchecked encroachments and illegal earth-cutting ravaging Tangmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Talking to Greater Kashmir, MLA Tangmarg, Farooq Ahmad Shah said that a detailed report would be sought from the concerned officials and action would follow accordingly.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Minga Sherpa told Greater Kashmir that he would look into the matter.

Talking to Greater Kashmir, Conservator Forests North Kashmir Circle, Anup Kumar Soni said he would inquire into the matter. “I will order an inquiry into it,” he said.

Meanwhile, the J&K Civil Society Forum (JKCSF) and other stakeholders voiced concern over the unchecked encroachments, illegal earth-cutting, and misuse of forest land in Tangmarg.

JKCSF Chairman Abdul Qayoom Wani said that the alleged conspiracy between a land mafia and certain forest officials had resulted in misuse of the forest land which was being illicitly sold to “unsuspecting residents of Kashmir.”

“Such actions have not only ravaged the region’s natural beauty but also undermined the rights of local residents,” Wani said.

He said that the locals from Tangmarg had been reporting severe restrictions imposed on many villages, with families unable to construct even basic structures including cow sheds on their revenue land.

“This conflict between the Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) and the Forest Department has created immense hardships for the locals,” Wani said.

He said the locals had complained that the approach roads used by villagers and property owners were being blocked and denied under dubious pretexts.

“But, illegal activities in the area are being allowed without any restriction. This raises serious concerns about fairness and accountability,” Wani said.

He said that such “environmental and administrative mismanagement” has far-reaching consequences, creating a humanitarian crisis.

The JKCSF demanded an immediate and transparent probe into the matter.

“The MLA Tangmarg has assured to take action in this regard and investigate encroachments done in the area,” Wani said.

He urged the authorities to take swift action against the accused and expose those responsible for the misuse of forest land.

“All these should be exposed regardless of their influence or position,” he said.
