Srinagar, Dec 10: Residents of Tajiudin Colony at Natipora have decried failure of authorities to macadamise inner roads and construct drainage system in the locality.

A delegation of residents told Greater Kashmir that lack of drainage system in the area is impacting their daily lives.

They said even moderate rain leads to water accumulation, transforming streets into miniature waterways.

"Lack of drainage poses serious health risks to the inhabitants. Stagnant water has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. We are grappling with the dual challenges of waterlogging and deteriorating public health," said Farooq Ahmad, a local.

Another resident, Waseem Ahmad said that the drainage has already been approved but authorities are “delaying” it , creating problems for the residents.

"We are facing problems during the winter season. Our children are facing a tough time as they cannot go out for tuition. Despite multiple pleas to the authorities, they are ignoring us," he said. He said that as winter approaches, there is a heightened urgency for proper drainage and macadamised roads.

"The authorities should have prioritised fixing the roads and constructing drainage before embarking on smart city initiatives. It's challenging to perceive this city as smart when the roads and residential colonies are in such a dire condition,” said another shopkeeper.

Rafi Manzoor who is looking after drainage at Srinagar Municipal Corporation ( SMC) told Greater Kashmir that the drainage system in that area has not been approved yet.

"If drainage has been approved, the residents should present the documents. These residents should bring this issue to the notice of the SMC Commissioner. We will definitely look into this matter," he said.
