Sweltering Forecast | Heatwave to linger for another week: MeT

Srinagar, May 29: The Meteorological (MeT) Department Wednesday predicted that the ongoing heatwave in Jammu and Kashmir is expected to continue for another week.

The maximum temperature recorded in Srinagar was 32.6 degrees Celsius, 27.8 degrees Celsius in Pahalgam, 22.4 degrees Celsius in Gulmarg, 43.6 degrees Celsius in Jammu, 39.4 degrees Celsius in Katra, 32.4 degrees Celsius in Batote, 31.8 degrees Celsius in Banihal, and 34.2 degrees Celsius in Bhaderwah.

The MeT officials said that there would be no significant relief from the current heatwave conditions for the next week.

The continued high temperatures have prompted advisories for residents to take precautions against sunstroke and dehydration.

The MeT officials said that there is a possibility of thundershower activity at isolated places across the region on May 29.

The weather is expected to be partly to generally cloudy with light rain or thundershowers at isolated places from May 30 to 31.

Similar weather conditions are forecast from June 1 to 2, with partly to generally cloudy skies and light rain or thundershowers at isolated places.

The MeT officials said that the region is likely to experience generally dry weather from June 3 to 4.

Generally cloudy skies with light rain or thundershowers at scattered places are anticipated from June 5 to 7.

Meanwhile, the authorities issued advisories for both Kashmir and Jammu regions.

The plains of Jammu division would continue to face hot and dry weather conditions, with no respite from the heat wave over the next seven days.

The residents have been advised to avoid exposure to heat during peak hours from 12 noon to 3 pm and to stay hydrated, especially the elderly, infants, and children.

In the Kashmir division and hilly areas of Jammu, a slight relief from the heat wave was expected during May 30 to 31 and June 1 and 2nd in most parts of the Kashmir division and a few hilly areas of the Jammu division.

Another spell of heat wave is predicted for June 3 to 4 in the Kashmir division.

The MET Centre Srinagar emphasised the importance of taking necessary precautions to mitigate the effects of the heat wave.

Vulnerable groups, including the elderly and young children, have been particularly urged to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and to increase fluid intake to stay hydrated.
