Justice Varale's appointment was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on January 19. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the senior-most High Court Judge from a Scheduled Caste, and before his elevation to the Supreme Court, he was the only Chief Justice from a Scheduled Caste among the Chief Justices of High Courts throughout the nation.

The Central government officially notified Justice Varale's appointment on January 24. Before this, he had been serving as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. With this new role, Justice Varale becomes the third sitting judge of the Supreme Court hailing from the Dalit community.
