Srinagar, Sep 22: Leader of the Opposition in J&K Assembly Sunil Sharma on Monday launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accusing him of “shirking responsibility, failing to act decisively during crises, and neglecting the people in the face of growing challenges.”

Speaking to reporters here, Sharma alleged that “Omar Abdullah often creates an illusion of authority but backs off when real governance and accountability are required.”

“He always claims he has no powers when it’s time to act. These are failed leaders who show no concern for the poor. Now, the real competition is about development, not excuses,” he said.

The senior BJP leaders' remarks come amid widespread public concern following devastating floods and cloudbursts that have ravaged large parts of Jammu and Kashmir, leaving hundreds homeless, destroying infrastructure, and halting critical transport routes, including the highway to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine.

Highlighting the BJP’s response to the disaster, LoP said the Government of India has already begun reviewing compensation measures and remains committed to delivering relief to all affected families.

“Senior BJP leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, visited affected areas, met victims’ families. We are actively working to ensure that this aid reaches those in need without delay,” Sharma said.

He further confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the Union Territory soon, though the final schedule has not been announced. The visit is expected to be crucial, with the public hoping for a comprehensive relief package and announcements related to infrastructure, housing, and connectivity projects.

Sharma accused Omar Abdullah of being absent during critical moments following the floods.

“Omar Sahab was busy in Chennai, preparing for the Paris visit, while people here were drowning. The NC-led government was simply missing from the ground,” he said.
