Sunday Sprint: Kashmir's 1st International Marathon draws over 2,000 athletes
Srinagar, Oct 19: In a landmark event signalling Kashmir's emergence as a global sports destination, over 2,000 athletes from around the world will participate in the inaugural Kashmir International Marathon on October 20.
Raja Yaqoob Farooq, Kashmir Director of Tourism, announced that the prestigious event has attracted elite runners from 13 countries, alongside top athletes from 29 states and Union Territories across India.
The marathon, which will be flagged off by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at 6:15 am on Sunday, features both full marathon (42 km) and half-marathon (21 km) categories.
"We have secured participation from the world's finest athletes, including elite runners, Asian gold medallists, and some of the best competitors from Europe and Africa," Director Tourism revealed during a press conference. The event has garnered 2,030 registrations, highlighting its international appeal.
Beyond its sporting significance, the marathon serves a dual purpose as a powerful statement about Kashmir's improved security situation. "When athletes can run 42 kilometres through the Valley, it speaks volumes about Kashmir's peaceful environment," Farooq emphasised, adding that the region is now welcoming tourists from across the globe.
The tourism department is leveraging this high-profile event to showcase Kashmir's rich cultural heritage. "Our goal extends beyond sports," Farooq explained. "We're using this platform to highlight our niche products, handicrafts, and cuisine to a global audience." The participating athletes, many with substantial social media followings, are expected to become informal brand ambassadors for Kashmir's tourism sector.
Local participation forms a crucial component of the event's success, with strong representation from Kashmir's athletic community. Looking ahead, Farooq expressed optimism about the marathon's long-term impact: "This event will inspire our youth, and we anticipate seeing full marathon runners emerging from Kashmir in the next 5-10 years."
The marathon route will take runners through some of Kashmir's most scenic locations, offering participants a unique blend of athletic challenge and cultural experience.
