Students suffer as teachers’ posts at Gurez schools go unfilled
Srinagar, Jul 25: Reflecting the lacuna in the educational set-up, the government higher secondary schools in Gurez area of Bandipora district have become the victim of the official apathy as the department has left the students, enrolled in these schools, without teachers.
The current situation in these schools has punctured the government claims of strengthening the education sector in rural areas. The schools are without teachers at a time when the education minister a few weeks ago stated that the teachers who have been working in cities and towns for decades will be sent to the schools established in remote areas.
However, the present situation of the schools in far off areas like Gurez depict a contrary situation. As per the official figures most of the lecturer, master and teacher positions in these schools are vacant for the last many years, leaving students high and dry.
Government Higher Secondary School Izmarg Gurez is a case in place. As per the official statistics, the school has 11 sanctioned positions of lecturers against which 10 posts are vacant and only one lecturer is working in the school.
The post of Lecturer for Education subject is vacant since 2024, Zoology, Botany, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics 2023 and History are vacant since 2023 while the post of English lecturer, Political Science are vacant since 2022 and post of Urdu is vacant since 2015.
Out of six sanctioned posts of teachers four are vacant in the school.
The figures have come to fore, days after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah asked stakeholders to visit remote areas before comparing government and private schools.
The CM claimed that government school teachers, posted in schools of far off areas, were working hard. But the schools in places like Gurez are almost without teachers. The official figures have revealed that the government has only established schools in far off areas like Gurez but has not provided adequate teachers for the students from time to time.
Izmarg school is not the only case in the area but the situation in all other schools is no different. In government HSS Badugam Tulail, against the sanctioned strength of 11 posts nine are vacant and against three sanctioned posts of masters only one is filled. The Lecturer post of Urdu is vacant from May 2025, English, Education, History, Physics, Zoology and Mathematics are vacant from June 2023.. The post of Lecturer Botany is vacant since August 2021 and Economics post is vacant since May 2017. The school has two posts of masters and teachers vacant as well.
Similarly, government HSS Kilshai Tulail has 10 out of 11 lecturer posts vacant while three out of six master posts are vacant as well. Some lecturer positions in the school have been vacant since their creation in the school in June 2018. The government boys and girls HSS Dawar Gurez are no different from other schools of the area. Boys HSS Dawar has seven out of 13 lecturer posts vacant. The posts are vacant in the school since 2021 and 2022, 2023
Girls HSS Dawar Gurez has a total sanctioned strength of teaching staff of 22 people out of which 12 posts are filled while 10 are lying vacant. Out of 15 posts of lecturers eight are lying vacant and out of three Master posts two are lying vacant.
