Strict action ordered against violators of tobacco sale ban near schools in Bandipora
Bandipora, Oct 18: The Executive Magistrate 1st Class Ajas imposed a complete ban on the sale, storage, and offering of tobacco products within a 100-meter radius of all educational institutions under his jurisdiction. The order has been issued under the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply, and Distribution) Act, 2003 (COTPA).
The magistrate’s order stated that the prohibition aims to safeguard the health and well-being of students and to discourage the initiation of tobacco use among the youth. The order came into effect immediately.
As per the directions, no individual or shopkeeper shall sell, offer for sale, or store tobacco products within the restricted 100-meter zone of any school, college, or other educational institution. All vendors and business establishments currently selling tobacco products within this range have been directed to cease the sale immediately.
The order further mandates the D.O. Ajas to enforce the directive strictly and initiate legal proceedings against violators under the relevant sections of the COTPA Act. Educational institutions and locals have been requested to report any violations to the nearest police station or the office of the undersigned authority.
The Executive Magistrate warned that violations of the order would invite strict penal action as per the provisions of the COTPA Act and other applicable laws. The directive, issued in the interest of public health and student welfare, shall remain in force until further instructions.
Copies of the order have been forwarded to the District Magistrate Bandipora, Senior Superintendent of Police Bandipora, SDPO Sumbal, and D.O. Ajas for necessary information and implementation. [KNT]
