Strengthening the fight against drug abuse in J&K
Drug abuse in Jammu and Kashmir is now escalating, threatening the future of our youth and the stability of our society. Despite government initiatives like awareness campaigns and establishment of rehabilitation centers across J&K, the problem persists. In 2023, the Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment had informed the parliament that there are approximately 13.5 lakh drug users in J&K, spanning across all age groups. What we now require is a comprehensive, collective approach. The administration’s efforts are laudable but insufficient on their own.
Education sector must be at the forefront of this battle. Schools and colleges must intensify their educational programs about the dangers of substance abuse. Equipping our youth with knowledge is the first line of defense against this menace. For instance, organizing workshops and collaborating with local health organizations for regular awareness campaigns can make a difference. Communities, too, must step up. Parents, teachers, and local leaders need to create a supportive environment that discourages drug use and promotes healthy living.
Successful community-based initiatives, such as neighborhood watch programs and local support groups have shown promising results in other regions. By fostering close-knit networks and providing positive role models, communities can play a crucial role in keeping young individuals away from harmful behaviors and towards productive, drug-free lives. As a society, it is our responsibility to keep an eye on our children and monitor the potential use of drugs. This fight requires more than government action. It calls for a unified, determined effort from all sectors. Together, as a unified front, we can create a healthier, safer, and drug-free future for J&K, ensuring that youth thrive in a society free from this menace.
