Srinagar, Jul 31: Officials from the Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL) said the stolen lids had just recently been installed to replace earlier ones that had also been stolen.

Chief Engineer SSCL, Qayoom Kirmani, expressed deep concern over the recurring thefts.

"We are trying to upgrade the city's infrastructure under the Smart City project, but these repeated acts of vandalism are extremely disheartening. Our engineers have replaced the lids several times. It's not just a loss of property, it is a setback to the entire initiative," he said.

Kirmani confirmed that he has formally written to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, urging swift and strict action.

"We have loopholes, no doubt. But the infrastructure we build must be protected not just by the administration but by every citizen. These covers cost thousands of rupees each, and this recurring theft is causing heavy financial losses to the public exchequer,” he added

To mention, this is not an isolated incident. Last year, nearly two dozen manhole lids were stolen from the Poloview area. An official pointed out that the lack of firm action has emboldened the culprits.

"These thefts have happened multiple times in the last two years, right in the city centre. There is a need of substantial action so that thieves are not encouraged," the official said.
