SSCL bus passengers voice frustration over missing stops, timetable irregularities
Srinagar, Mar 4: Despite strengthening the public transport system in Srinagar, Smart City buses are facing significant operational challenges that are causing widespread passenger discontent. Commuters have long complained about the absence of designated bus stops, a problem that not only inconveniences passengers but also contributes to traffic congestion.
Passengers have raised multiple concerns about the bus service, urging authorities to address these issues and ensure smooth operations.
Amir Ahmad, a regular commuter, highlighted the critical problem of improper bus stops. "Buses are stopping every few dozen meters due to the lack of designated bus stops. This not only slows down the service but also creates unnecessary traffic jams," he explained.
Timetable inconsistency is another major issue plaguing the bus service.
Passengers report frequent delays and unpredictable schedules, which are particularly problematic during late hours and adverse weather conditions. A passenger from Harwan, who frequently travels the Boulevard-Harwan route, shared, "Over the past few months, we have repeatedly experienced issues with timetable adherence, which disrupts our daily commute."
The bus service's seating arrangements have also come under scrutiny. Despite having designated seats for women, the elderly, and people with disabilities, these reserved areas are often occupied by other passengers without any intervention from conductors.
Gousia, a female passenger, expressed her frustration: "Many times, female and elderly passengers are left standing in crowded buses due to seat mismanagement."
Another frequent traveller noted the deteriorating quality of the service. "I take the Parimpora-Hazratbal Smart City Bus daily to my office in Khanyar. With each passing month, travelling has become increasingly difficult due to persistent ticketing and scheduling problems," he said.
A senior official from the SSCL bus operations acknowledged some of these concerns. "We recognise there's a lack of civic sense among passengers. We're working on implementing designated bus stops and are in regular communication with our bus operators to ensure rule compliance. Whenever a grievance is reported, we strive to address it immediately," the official stated.
While the Smart City bus service aims to improve urban transportation, these ongoing issues suggest that significant improvements are needed to meet passenger expectations and provide a reliable public transport experience.
