Srinagar’s Pokhribal set to host 7th District Rowing Championship
Srinagar, Sep 23: Pokhribal (Chhota Nigeen) is set to host the 7th Indoor District Srinagar Rowing Championship 2025, marking a major step in promoting water sports, youth engagement, and sustainable tourism in the city, following sustained advocacy by the Nigeen Lake Conservation Organisation (NLCO).
As per a statement issued on Tuesday, special gratitude was extended to JKARS, P K Pole (former Divisional Commissioner Kashmir), and Ms Bilkees for their tireless support in making this possible.
Their commitment has paved the way for a future where our lakes will not only be ecological assets but also vibrant centres of community life.
Tourism & Youth Engagement
Pokhribal’s revival as a sports hub carries immense potential for tourism. By engaging visitors and locals alike in water-based activities, the initiative can create fresh avenues of livelihood while highlighting Kashmir’s natural beauty. The move also resonates with NLCO’s larger vision of positioning Srinagar’s lakes as a global attraction for ecotourism and heritage tourism.
Towards a Drug-Free Youth
With drug abuse emerging as one of the gravest social challenges, NLCO believes that encouraging healthy alternatives such as sports is the most effective way to protect our young generation. The Rowing Championship at Pokhribal will serve as a living example of channelling youthful energy into constructive pursuits.
