Srinagarites throng water bodies to beat scorching heat
Srinagar, Jun 19: As Srinagar continues to reel under an intense heatwave, locals are finding creative ways to stay cool!
With temperatures touching record highs, residents of the summer capital are thronging water bodies, springs, and mountain spots around the city to escape the blazing sun.
The Meteorological Department (MeT) has been forecasting above normal temperatures . Meanwhile, temperatures in Srinagar has crossed 33 degrees Celsius in past few weeks, which is about 5 degrees Celsius above the average.
The rising temperatures have turned water bodies including Dal Lake besides streams at Harwan, Dara, and Dachigam into popular retreats for youth and families.
“Over the past few days, the heat wave has been extreme, which is too much for a cool place like Kashmir. We are trying to beat this heat, and every weekend, we find ourselves at places like Harwan and Dal Lake. Swimming is the best way to go away from the heat,” said Mudasir Ahmad, a local from Harwan.
In addition to water dips, Srinagarites are also heading to higher altitudes. Spots like Faqir Gujri, Khimber, and adjoining places in Ganderbal to get some cool air.
“We are used to visiting the Ganderbal area, including popular places like Wayul. Since the summer is at its peak, we take some time out to visit these places that are a few kilometres from our home,” said Irshad Ahmad, a local from Batapora.
Interestingly, the heatwave has also boosted business for ice cream parlours, cold drink stalls, and juice vendors across the city.
“Our sales have peaked in the last few weeks. From ice creams to fresh fruit juices, people are constantly coming in to cool themselves,” said Mohammad Maqbool, a shopkeeper at Downtown, adding that fresh fruit salad sellers, too, are doing brisk business as people look for light, hydrating meals.
Health experts have urged residents to take precautions as the heat wave is expected to persist. People have been advised that they should stay hydrated, avoid direct sun during peak hours, and include fresh fruits and vegetables in their diet.
With no early signs of relief from the scorching weather, Srinagarites are embracing natural water retreats, shaded mountain trails, and chilled summer treats as the go-to options to beat the unrelenting heat.
