SRINAGAR WARMS UP SLIGHTLY
Srinagar, Jan 9: While most places in Jammu and Kashmir recorded a slight increase in minimum temperatures, the Meteorological Department has predicted dry weather until January 15.
“Generally dry weather is anticipated from January 10 to 14, with no significant weather activity expected until January 15,” MeT officials said here.
They said Srinagar experienced a slight increase in night temperatures on Tuesday with the mercury settling at a low of minus 2.4 degrees Celsius against minus 4.3 degrees Celsius the previous night.
The temperature was 0.5 degrees Celsius below the normal range for this time of the year.
They said that Gulmarg ski resort in the Baramulla district of north Kashmir witnessed a low of minus 4.6 degrees Celsius, slightly higher than the minus 4 degrees Celsius recorded the previous night with the temperature being 3.2 degrees Celsius above normal.
The MeT officials said that Pahalgam health resort in Anantnag recorded a low of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius, indicating a rise from minus 5.3 degrees Celsius the previous night, with the temperature being 2.6 degrees Celsius above normal.
They said that another south Kashmir health resort, Kokernag recorded a minimum of minus 1.2 degrees Celsius, up from minus 2.1 degrees Celsius the previous night, and the temperature was above normal by 2.8 degrees Celsius for the area.
The MeT officials said that in Qazigund, the mercury dipped to a minimum of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 4.2 degrees Celsius the previous night with the temperature being 0.5 degrees Celsius above normal at the place.
Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.5 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 5 degrees Celsius the previous night, showing a deviation of 1.8 degrees Celsius below normal.
In Jammu, the minimum temperature was 5.1 degrees Celsius, below normal by 2.3 degrees Celsius compared to the previous night.
Banihal recorded a low of minus 0 degrees Celsius, Batote 2.1 degrees Celsius, and Bhaderwah 0.6 degrees Celsius.
Kashmir is currently experiencing Chillai Kalan, a 40-day harsh winter period that will conclude on January 29.
However, winter would persist with Chillai Khurd (January 30 to February 18) and Chillai Bachha (February 19 to February 28).
