Srinagar records season’s coldest night

Srinagar, Nov 22: Srinagar experienced its coldest night of the season so far, with temperatures plummeting to minus 1.2 degrees Celsius, Meteorological Department officials said here.

This marked a significant drop from the previous night’s low of minus 0.4 degrees Celsius, as winter conditions intensified across the Kashmir Valley.

The night temperature in Srinagar was 1.3 degrees Celsius below the seasonal average.Sub-zero temperatures were recorded across most parts of the valley for the third consecutive night, with only a few areas staying marginally above the freezing mark.

Qazigund, the gateway town to the Valley, recorded a low of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam, a prominent tourist destination, was the coldest location in the area at minus 2.3 degrees Celsius.

Ski resort of Gulmarg also witnessed a sharp dip in mercury, recording minus 0.6 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Kupwara in North Kashmir shivered at minus 0.8 degrees Celsius, further highlighting the widespread chill gripping the area.

Notably, Kokernag in South Kashmir was the only weather station in the valley where temperatures remained above freezing. It recorded a low of 0.4 degrees Celsius.

MeT has predicted light rain or thunderstorms at isolated locations in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. Additionally, the higher reaches of Kashmir may see light snowfall or rain over the next two days, adding to the wintry conditions in J&K.
