Srinagar, Oct 27: In a proud moment for Srinagar, the city’s transformative urban mobility initiatives have been recognized at the 17th Urban Mobility India Awards.

CEO of Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL), Owais Ahmed, received the “Award of Excellence in Urban Transport” from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

News agency KINS reported that this award celebrates SSCL’s exceptional work in developing a top-tier Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) system, marking a major milestone in Srinagar’s journey to becoming a sustainable, people-centered city.

SSCL’s ambitious project has created 100 kilometers of pedestrian and cycling paths across the city, featuring upgraded lighting and essential amenities, making Srinagar more accessible and pedestrian-friendly. Key locations, including the iconic Lal Chowk and Jhelum Riverfront, have been revitalized with pedestrian plazas, cafes, and riverside promenades, drawing both residents and tourists to explore the city on foot.

Another highlight of SSCL’s vision is the Public Bicycle System, which includes 1,000 bicycles and 200 e-bikes available at 180 stations throughout Srinagar. This initiative supports eco-friendly transportation, reduces carbon emissions, and promotes a healthy, active lifestyle among citizens.

Smart City officials expressed pride in this recognition, stating, “Our goal is to create a city that prioritizes people and sustainability. This award reflects our commitment to transforming Srinagar into a vibrant, accessible, and eco-conscious urban space.”

With these advancements, Srinagar is emerging as a model for sustainable urban development in India, offering residents and visitors a more connected and environmentally friendly city experience.
