Srinagar, Sep 24: Srinagar Police has refuted claims circulating on social media, alleging the mass detention of thousands of individuals.

According to a post on X by Srinagar Police, these assertions are being “propagated by mischievous elements with a history of disrupting the electoral process and are termed unfounded and spurious."

In a clarification, the police said that “only individuals with criminal records or those showing tendencies to disrupt the peace are being subjected to legal action under preventive laws.”

"Few miscreants with past conduct and proclivity to disrupt the electoral process, as well as those with criminal antecedents, are being dealt with under preventive sections of the law following due procedure," the post reads.

Police assured public that these preventive measures are in place to ensure peace and the smooth conduct of the upcoming elections. "These legal measures are aimed at ensuring a free and fair electoral process," it added. The statement comes at a time when Jammu and Kashmir is preparing for second phase of elections.

The police has urged citizens “to avoid giving credence to rumours and baseless accusations circulating online.” "People are advised to refrain from according any credence to such unfounded and spurious assertions," it said.
