Srinagar markets remain abuzz with shoppers ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr
Srinagar, March 26: Ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, the markets across Srinagar, including Downtown and city center Lal Chowk, remained abuzz, wearing a festive look.
Traders said that there was a heavy rush of shoppers in Srinagar markets. Markets in Lal Chowk, Nowhatta, Goni Khan, Maharaj Bazar, Amira Kadal, and Hazratbal witnessed a heavy rush for Eid-related purchases.
Manzoor Malik, General Secretary of Goni Khan Market, said the traders' body kept the market open on Sundays to cater to the rush of customers.
“We do this every year so that people can shop for maximum days,” he said, adding that for the past few days, the rush of shoppers has increased, and they were hoping for a good trade ahead of Eid.
“Goni Khan market is famous and caters to thousands of shoppers regularly, particularly women. We have seen a huge rush of shoppers for the Eid festival, which is just few days away. The market deals with clothing, foot wear, kitchen items and numerous other products and that is why we see a huge rush of people ahead of Eid,” Malik said.
Meanwhile, the markets in Downtown, including the famous Nowhata and Jamia Masjid markets, wore a festive look, with shoppers from across Srinagar and other districts making purchases of various items.
“The rush after 3 pm is huge, and every shop remains abuzz. This is a famous market, and we come here to buy things for our children and also every kind of household item including matting and other things. The quality, prices, and range of choices makes this market a favorite among shoppers,” said Irfan Ahmad.
The markets of other Downtown areas were also abuzz ahead of Eid. While some people bought colourful clothes and shoes, markets like Bohri Kadal were a favorite among people for purchases of spices for Eid feasts.
“The Downtown markets are famous for numerous items like spices. The past few days have witnessed a huge rush of people, and we expect more rush in the coming days,” said Ayaz Zehgeer, who is associated with Beopar Mandal.
Meanwhile the shopper and traders have appealed to the authorities to ensure better traffic management. They said the traffic mess around markets is taking a toll on them amid the Eid rush.
