Ganderbal, Feb 24: The Srinagar-Leh National Highway connecting Kashmir with Ladakh remained closed for the seventh day on Saturday.

The highway remained closed due to the accumulation of snow following the recent spell of precipitation. The highway was closed to traffic on Sunday after the Zojila Pass and the higher reaches of Kashmir received heavy snowfall.

Zojila Pass saw snow accumulation of over 5 feet.

A senior Border Roads Organisation (BRO) official said that the snow clearance work on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway would start once the weather improves.

“There is a forecast of another wet spell from February 27,” he said.

Officials said that several places had been hit by avalanches and it would take an extra effort to clear the road.

This year the Srinagar-Leh National Highway remained open for a maximum period during winter months.

The project Beacon of the BRO is responsible for the maintenance and clearance of the Srinagar-Leh National Highway from Sonamarg side up to Zero Point on Zojila while project Vijayak is responsible for the Drass side.
