Srinagar Jammu NH open for 2-way traffic
Ramban, Dec 6: Srinagar–Jammu National Highway (NH-44) remained open for the two-way movement of light, medium, and heavy vehicles on Saturday, traffic officials said.
In an advisory issued for Sunday, the Traffic department announced that NH-44 would continue to remain open for all categories of vehicles, subject to fair weather and satisfactory road conditions.
Officials managing highway traffic regulation informed that although the road stayed functional in both directions throughout the day, vehicular movement remained slow at several stretches, including Balli Nullah, Dewal, Nashri–Dalwas, Maroog, and Kishtwari Pather between Udhampur and Banihal.
Single-lane conditions at multiple points and the breakdown of several heavy vehicles contributed to the sluggish flow.
Despite these intermittent slowdowns, hundreds of vehicles crossed the Chenani–Nashri and Banihal–Qazigund tunnels till late Saturday evening, they added.
Authorities urged operators of light motor vehicles and private car owners to prefer travelling during daylight hours.
“Night travel should be avoided, as the movement of heavy vehicles between the Chenani–Nashri and Banihal–Qazigund (Navyug) tunnels during late hours may cause inconvenience to commuters,” the advisory stated.
Drivers have also been reminded to maintain lane discipline, follow traffic regulations, and avoid overtaking or driving on the wrong side—violations that frequently lead to congestion and delays on the highway.
Officials further advised travellers to check the latest traffic updates before starting their journey.
