Ramban, May 28: The Srinagar- Jammu National Highway remained open for two-way traffic of passenger light medium vehicles and one way traffic of heavy vehicles for Kashmir on Tuesday.

However, despite one-way traffic of heavy vehicles, traffic movement remained slow due to the narrow carriageways at many places between Nashri and Banihal sectors.

Traffic officials said traffic movement remains slow due to single lane road stretches, on foot movement of nomads and breakdown of few heavy vehicles, and 90 degree curves near Tunnel, T5, between Nashri and Banihal in Ramban district.

It is important to mention here that due to the single-lane carriageway at several places especially at Dalwass, Mehad, Panthyal, Magarkote and at several places between Nashri and Banihal sector of the highway, heavy vehicles are plying on alternate days between the two capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar.

Traffic officials monitoring the regulation of traffic on the National Highway in Ramban said that due to single-lane road at poor road surface conditions at Dalwass, Mehad-Cafeteria, Hingni, Gangroo, Kishtwari Pathar and at several other places between Nashri and Banihal sectors traffic movement remained slow on the highway.

They said that the highway remained open and hundreds of vehicles including private cars, and passenger light medium and heavy vehicles crossed the Nashri-Banihal tunnels for their destinations in valley Kashmir, Jammu and other places till late Tuesday evening.

Traffic Officials at Traffic Control Unit Ramban said that subject to fair weather and road conditions passenger light, medium vehicles would be allowed to ply on either side whereas heavy vehicles would be allowed to ply towards Jammu from Qazigund Kashmir after assessing traffic and road conditions on Wednesday.
