Srinagar, Sep 18: In the centre of Gulab Bagh area on city outskirts, Aziz-ur-Rehman, a 22-year-old multidisciplinary artist, is carving a niche by transforming bones into masterpieces.

he discovered bone carving by watching the series “Vikings” on Netflix. “I was inclined with it to promote of my favorite form of art after he I saw beauty in the use of bones,” he said.

Aziz collects bones from fields and mutton sellers. After intense cleaning, he uses these bones to create beautiful art objects including bone ornaments such as necklaces, and earrings and even home décor items such as bone knife, frames, brush holders, pen holders and jewelry stands.

“I mostly use bone derived from sheep and goats,” he said. Being interested in social networking, he shows his own products, which draw the interest of not only the members of the online community but also some of his family members as well.

From this work, he said “it is clear that beauty has some way of planning and emerging in places that one could never fathom, and that is why bone carving is a masterpiece.

Last year, he participated in an exhibition 'Know Your Artisan' initiative by the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom. His work was widely appreciated. “His story is clear evidence that passion and innovation as radical typographical changes to conventional art work,” remarked an artist.
