Srinagar, Oct 16: Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, Nalin Prabhat, on Thursday underlined the importance of sports as a means to strengthen police-public relations and engage youth positively.

Speaking at the All India Police Judo Cluster 2025 sports event in Srinagar, Prabhat said the J&K Police has been consistently organising large-scale sporting events across the Union Territory to promote peace and community participation.

“Over the years, J&K Police has organised numerous youth-centric sports events, from marathons and cycle rallies to football and cricket tournaments,” the DGP said.

He cited the example of a cycle rally in which over 2,500 participants took part and a marathon that saw the participation of more than 4,000 runners.

“Such initiatives help us connect with the common people and promote peace through sports,” he added.

Highlighting the recent football tournament, the Martyrs Memorial Tournament, the Aman Memorial Cricket Tournament and other events, which he said have become annual fixtures in J&K’s sporting calendar.

“Since 2000, we have organised 17 police tournaments and clusters, and our sportsmen have brought laurels to the force at the national and international levels,” he added.

DGP said J&K Police athletes have excelled in various disciplines, winning “13 gold, 4 silver, and 6 bronze medals at the international level”.

The DGP, during the address, thanked the J&K government, the J&K Sports Council and the Department of Youth Services and Sports for their support in hosting such events. “Our civic action programmes, supported by the Ministry of Home Affairs, have helped us reach thousands of young people and promote harmony through sports,” he said.
