Srinagar, May 14: Failure of authorities to take action against speeding tippers poses risk to commuters in the summer capital.

The commuters said that no action is being taken to prevent over speeding by tippers especially during evening and morning hours.

"During the evening, tipper drivers blatantly violate traffic rules. The move without number plates. It is ironic that traffic authorities are sitting on the serious issue,” said Aafaq Ahmad, a commuter.

Nasir Khan, Chairman, Kashmir Road Safety Foundation, said that they have been working on the issue. He said that the heavy vehicle operators, including tippers, are running without number plates and using other tactics to hide their number plates.

“We have conducted several on-road programs targeting the tipper drivers. We have collaborated with the Srinagar Traffic police on this issue and held late-night awareness drives. The road accident deaths are peaking every year, and we will continue to work on the issue,” Khan said.

DySP Traffic City Srinagar Mehboob Ul Haq said that they are working on several issues including overspeeding by tipper drivers. He said that the Traffic police is committed to making the roads safer for Srinagarites, and the drives will be intensified. “There is no entry for tippers in Srinagar city during the day. However, indeed, there is the issue of speeding heavy vehicles during evening and night hours, which we are addressing accordingly. We will resume and intensify the traffic drives from Monday to address all the issues, including the issue of speeding tipper,” Haq said.
