Special prayers held at Jamia Masjid for end to dry spell
Srinagar, Jan 12: Amid prolonged dry spell in Kashmir, a large number of people offered special prayers, for rains and snowfall, at the historic Jamia Masjid on Friday.
The MuttahidaMajlis-e-Ulema (MMU) Jammu and Kashmir, a conglomerate of religious bodies, had urged Imams to lead "Salat-ul-Istisqa" (prayers for rain) after Friday prayers.
The largest congregation was held at Jamia Masjid. The managing body of Jamia Masjid, the AnjumanAuqaf, expressed concern over the drought-like situation, describing it as "extremely alarming."
The Anjumanemphasised that the absence of rain and snow during this peak winter time is not only a matter of concern for those involved in agriculture but also for the common people. According to a statement the Auqaf said “lack of precipitation raises fears of potential disease outbreaks.” It urged people to seek forgiveness from Allah and recommended organising repentance meetings to seek divine intervention in overcoming the on-going difficult situation due to dry spell.
"At this time of such trials, we should turn to Allah, seek forgiveness for our sins and help through supplications,” it said.
Kashmir is currently experiencing a snowless winter, even as the region is halfway through its harshest 40-day winter period, "Chillai-Kalan," which began on December 21.
Scientists have raised concerns about the impact of dry winters on glacier mass loss, warning of potential repercussions on hydropower generation, irrigation agriculture, and other dependent sectors if weather conditions do not improve. The call for prayers reflects the community's deep concern and hope for a change in weather patterns to alleviate the ongoing dry spell.
