Sopore, Nov 4: In a significant action to curb environmental violations, the Sopore Police, in coordination with the Geology and Mining Department and other allied agencies, have launched a major crackdown on illegal mining activities across the Police District.

During the ongoing drive, Police Station Dangiwacha registered an FIR (No. 113/2025) against 14 individuals allegedly involved in the illegal extraction of sand and other minor minerals from the red zone area along the River Jhelum at Nagbal Ladoora. Officials said the unauthorised excavation caused considerable damage to the river embankment and posed a serious threat to nearby infrastructure, including a local bridge.

The coordinated action, police said, is part of a sustained effort to protect river ecosystems, prevent illegal exploitation of natural resources, and ensure public safety. Surveillance has been intensified across vulnerable river stretches, with police teams maintaining a close watch in collaboration with revenue, mining, and irrigation authorities.

“Illegal extraction of minerals not only degrades the environment but also weakens river embankments and endangers lives and property. We will continue to act firmly against such offenders,” the official said.
