Sopore Police Foil Major Drug Smuggling Attempt; 54 Kgs of Poppy Straw Seized

Sopore, Sept19: In a significant breakthrough against the menace of drug trafficking, Sopore Police foiled a major smuggling attempt by seizing a huge consignment of contraband poppy straw during naka checking at Sofi Hamam Road in Tarzoo.

According to police officials, a load carrier bearing registration number JK04B-9881, moving from Nigli towards Chankhan, was intercepted for routine checking. On thorough search, 54 kilograms of poppy straw were recovered from the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Javaid Ahmad Dar, son of Gh. Mohi-ud-Din Dar, resident of Chankhan Sopore, was taken into custody on the spot. A case under FIR No. 124/2025, U/S 8/15 NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Tarzoo, and investigations have been initiated to unearth the entire supply chain and networks connected with the seized consignment.

Terming the operation a major success, Sopore Police reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against drug smuggling and peddling, stating that strict action will continue to be taken against those involved in “poisoning the youth.”

"No one involved in drug trafficking will be spared. Our action will remain strong, swift, and uncompromising," Sopore Police said in an official statement.

The police also appealed to the public to remain alert and share information about drug-related activities to strengthen the fight against the narcotics trade and build a drug-free Sopore.
