Officials said the activity had damaged the river embankment and posed a threat to nearby public infrastructure.

Authorities said the action is part of an effort to curb unauthorised extraction of natural resources, protect the environment and prevent loss to public property. Surveillance has been intensified at vulnerable stretches of the river, with police maintaining vigil in coordination with revenue, mining and irrigation departments.
