Sopore MLA seeks SIT probe into missing Kashmiri trader case in Delhi

Srinagar, Apr 10: Highlighting the issue of a 35-year-old trader missing from Delhi since February 16, 2025, Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Sopore Irshad Rasool Kar on Thursday brought the matter to the notice of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and sought a Joint Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into a missing Kashmiri trader’s case in Delhi.

In his letter to the CM, the MLA Sopore requested the formation of a joint SIT in the missing person case of Shabir Ahmad Shah (GD No 0025A, Police Station Nabi Karim, Delhi).

In his letter, Kar wrote: “I am writing to bring to your immediate attention a matter of grave concern regarding the lack of progress in the investigation of Shabir Ahmad Shah, 35, son of late Ghulam Nabi Shah of my constituency, who has been missing since February 16, 2025, after checking out from Continental Hotel, Delhi.”

The MLA Sopore informed the CM that a General Diary entry (GD No 0025A) was registered at Police Station Nabi Karim, Central District, Delhi, on February 20, 2025, but despite repeated follow-ups by the family, no substantive progress had been made in locating him.

He said that the family was distraught and feared for his safety given the prolonged silence from the investigating authorities.

Kar said that what was particularly alarming was the inordinate delay in tracing Shah even after a lapse of around two months.

“The family has not been informed of any concrete steps taken by Delhi Police, raising serious questions about the efficacy of the probe. Given the sensitive nature of this case involving a Kashmiri resident disappearing in the national capital, and considering the growing anxiety of the family, this matter demands urgent higher-level intervention,” he said.

The MLA Sopore said that in view of these circumstances, he strongly urges the CM’s office to constitute a Joint SIT comprising senior officers from J&K Police and relevant central agencies along with Delhi Police to ensure a swift, transparent and credible investigation.

“I also request your directions to the Delhi Police to expedite the case and provide regular updates to the grieving family. Your prompt intervention in this humanitarian matter would not only help deliver justice but also reinforce faith in our system,” he said.
