Somnath’s saga is victory, not victimhood: PM Modi
New Delhi Jan 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday addressed the Somnath Swabhiman Parv at Somnath in Gujarat, describing the occasion as a celebration of India’s civilisational pride, resilience, and spiritual heritage.
Speaking at the historic temple town, PM Modi said the event marked not only a thousand years of Somnath’s journey but also 75 years since its reconstruction after the independence.
He said Somnath symbolises India’s unbroken faith and strength, noting that despite repeated attacks over centuries, the temple was rebuilt time and again through collective resolve and devotion.
The PM recalled the sacrifices made by generations of devotees and rulers who protected and restored the shrine, and said the history of Somnath was one of victory and reconstruction rather than destruction.
Highlighting the cultural and historical significance of Prabhas Patan, he said the site was sanctified by both lord Shiva and lord Krishna and reflected the many dimensions of India’s civilisation.
PM Modi said that the Somnath Swabhiman Parv was not merely a remembrance of past invasions but a celebration of India’s continued existence, pride, and unity.
He also referred to the role of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in rebuilding the temple after independence and said attempts to undermine India’s heritage had failed.
The PM called for vigilance and unity against forces that seek to divide the country, adding that remembering the courage of ancestors was both a duty and a source of strength.
Linking heritage with development, he said Somnath today also reflects modern progress through improved connectivity, infrastructure and cultural initiatives.
PM Modi cited the expansion of Keshod airport, the introduction of the Ahmedabad-Veraval Vande Bharat train and the development of a pilgrimage circuit in the region as examples of this approach.
He said India’s civilisational message was rooted in balance, creation, and harmony, not hatred or destruction.
The PM urged citizens to draw inspiration from Somnath’s thousand-year saga to move confidently towards the future while remaining firmly connected to the nation’s cultural roots. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other dignitaries attended the event.
