Snowfall aftermath | Several areas cut off from Kupwara district headquarters

Kupwara, Feb 20: Several areas in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district are still cut off from district headquarters due to heavy snowfall in the district.

Electricity supply has been restored in most areas but several areas are reeling under darkness on second consecutive day. The upper reaches including Karnah, Machil and Keran are without electricity for last two days.

Vehicular traffic movement on Kupwara-Karnah, Kapwara-Machil, Kupwara-Keran and Kralpora-Budnamal roads remained suspended due to heavy snowfall in these areas.

Several residential houses were damaged due to overnight snowfall in the district. One house was damaged in Lalpora area while three other suffered extensive damage in Keran area of Kupwara.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Kupwara Mohammad Rouf told Greater Kashmir that the operation of snow clearance was in full swing in the entire district. He said that their preference has been to clear the important roads first so that in case of any medical emergency people should not face any hardships.

He sought cooperation from general public and asked them to not panic. “By tomorrow all the roads will be cleared,” he added.

On being asked about the status of electricity in the district, he said that supply has been restored in 80 percent and men and machinery are on job to achieve 100 percent result.
