Snow clearance on Srinagar -Leh Highway in progress

Ganderbal , Mar 6: The snow clearance operation on Zojila pass along Srinagar- Leh highway, the only road linking Ladakh with the rest of Jammu and Kashmir is going on in full swing. The highway was closed on Friday in view of heavy snowfall along the Zojila pass and Drass area of Kargil along the highway after remaining open for maximum possible time. Officials said that the project Vijayak and Beacon of the Border Roads Organization (BRO) started snow clearance on the Srinagar-Leh highway from both Sonamarg and Drass sides respectively on Wednesday and had pressed its men and machinery on job.

They said that the snow clearance work on the highway is nearing completion.

"The snow clearance work has been started and is going on for the last few days, adding that both project Vijayak and Beacon have been able to clear a huge stretch of the highway so far,” He added, “If the weather conditions remained favourable the snow clearance work on the highway will be connected soon". He said that the toughest work for snow clearance remains on the 30-km road stretch up to zero point of Zojila from Sonamarg as they were expecting more snow along the stretch. Pertinently, the Project Beacon of the Border Road Organization (BRO) is responsible for maintenance and clearance of the road up to zero point near Zojila from Sonamarg side, while the Vijayak of the BRO clears the road from the Drass side.
